Biography

Andy Gruenebaum (height: 1.85 (6 ft 0 in), born 30th of December 1982 in Overland Park, Kansas) is a American - Israeli professional footballer who played for San Jose Earthquakes as a goalkeeper in 2014 before retiring.

"The Hebrew Hammer", as Gruenebaum used tto be called during his years at the University of Kentucky, made an impressive 21 shutouts in 666 collegiate games playing for Kentucky Wildcats between 2011 and 2005.

In 2005, Gruenebaum played for the USL Premier Development League squad Des Moines Menace, obtaining the championship and being named MVP of the year.

In 2006, the American goalkeeper made his debut in the MLS after having being picked as third in the 2006 MLS Supplemental Draft by Columbus Crew. He played the last two games of the season due to a knee injury suffered by Jon Bush in May against DC United.

The next seasons weren't as prolific as expected for Gruenebaum. He started 10 games in 2007 but failed consolidating as a starter due to the great performance of Wll Hesmer. In 2008, just one league start. That same year Columbus Crew won the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup.

Until 2012, Gruenebaum just had sporadic interventions in the team due to injuries and the presence of Hesmer, nevertheless, 2012 was the breakout season for him. 33 games as a starter (8 shootouts). Same situation in 2013 but aggravated by injuries. After the 2013 season, The Kansas native goalkeeper was traded to Sporting Kansas City under the agreement of a 2nd round pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft in exchange. After one spell with his hometown club he entered the 2014 MLS Re-entry Draft and was picked by San Jose Earhquakes in stage one of the draft but Gruenebaum refused to join the squad and opted to retire.

All these trophies: 2 MLS Supporters' Shield, 3 MLS Eastern Conference and 1 MLS Cup were won by Andy Gruenebaum , after great and successful campaigns.
